Fennel seed, also known as Saunf in Hindi are Perumjeeragam in Malayalam
Fennel seed is an essential spice in the garam masala mix. It is used as a panch poran (mix of 5 spices) in the Bengali, Oriya and Assamese cuisines. Fennel is also used in the Chinese five-spice powder.
Fennel seed is often used as a mouth refresher and after-meal digestive. A sweet and aromatic spice, fennel has many medicinal uses too. It aids in digestion and helps to reduce bloating and indigestion. The aromatics in fennel has a calming and cooling effect and is hence used in many of the Ayurvedic massage oils.
